Tutorials

GenSim: A Toolset for Binary Translation and Emulation (8 AM-noon)
Organizers: Harry Wagstaff, Tom Spink, Bruno Bodin, Bjoern Franke (University of Edinburgh)
Website: http://gensim.org

Description: Dynamic binary translation and emulation are increasingly useful tools in a wide variety of contexts, from backwards compatibility, to software debugging, to architectural design and prototyping. However, there is usually a requirement for high performance of such tools, which can be difficult to attain without detailed knowledge of DBT and emulation.

This tutorial introduces GenSim, a tool which simplifies the process of producing emulators and DBT tools, and explain how to use it to perform simulations, and to perform architectural prototyping. We also show how these tools can be used for collecting performance metrics, such as instruction mix and memory traces.
